The weather report you can read with the kettle on
There's a particular kind of early spring morning that catches gardeners out. The sun's up, the sky's clear, the birds are going for it, and everything looks like an invitation to plant out the courgettes. Then you step outside in your slippers and discover it's barely above freezing. A thermometer on the window settles that question before the back door opens. You check it from the kitchen, with tea in hand, and decide whether today is a fleece day, a planting day or a stay-indoors-and-sow-more-seeds day. The Smart Garden Window Thermometer does exactly that. It sticks to the outside of the glass, you read it from the inside, and it needs no batteries, wires or setting up.
What is the Smart Garden Window Thermometer?
It's a lightweight outdoor thermometer designed to be fixed directly onto a window using the self-adhesive pads supplied. It sits on the outside of the glass, measuring the outdoor air temperature, while you read it from inside the house. Smart Garden states it’s accurate to within 0.5°C of the true temperature. It weighs just 34g and needs no batteries or power of any kind.
Who makes it?
Smart Garden Products is a British garden products company based in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. It supplies a wide range of garden essentials, including garden meters, thermometers, growhouses, plant supports and wildlife care. The window thermometer sits alongside its wall and greenhouse thermometers in its range of growing meters.
Why would a gardener want a window thermometer?
Because temperature decides so much of what happens in the garden, and the simplest way to keep an eye on it is from somewhere you look every day. A window thermometer turns the kitchen or back-door window into a quick weather check. It helps you decide: Whether there’s a risk of frost tonight, and whether tender plants need covering or bringing in. When it’s mild enough to start hardening off seedlings raised indoors or under glass. When frost-tender crops such as courgettes, squash, beans, sweetcorn and tomatoes are safe to plant out. Whether to open greenhouse vents and cold frame lids in the morning, or keep them shut a little longer. Whether the birdbath and the hens’ water are likely to freeze. Whether it’s worth hanging the washing out. Not strictly gardening, but a reasonable use of a thermometer all the same.
How do I fit a window thermometer?
Fitting takes a few minutes, but a little preparation helps the adhesive pads hold properly. Choose your window carefully (see placement tips below). Clean the outside of the glass where the thermometer will go, removing dirt, grease and any residue, then let it dry completely. Fix the self-adhesive pads to the thermometer, following any instructions on the pack. Press the thermometer firmly onto the outside of the glass and hold it in place for a little while so the pads bond well. Adhesive pads generally stick best when they’re applied to clean, dry glass in mild weather rather than on a frosty or wet day. If you’re fitting it in winter, choose a dry spell.
Where should I put a window thermometer?
Placement makes a big difference to how accurate the reading is. A thermometer sitting in full sun will read higher than the shade temperature, because sunlight warms the thermometer itself. That's the same reason weather stations are kept in shaded, ventilated boxes. For the most reliable readings: Choose a window on the shadier side of the house. A north-facing window is often best. Avoid windows near boiler flues, extractor fans, tumble dryer vents and outdoor lights, all of which give off warmth. Avoid windows directly above a heated conservatory or next to an often-opened door, where warm air escapes. Position it at a comfortable eye height, so you can read it easily from inside without craning. Because glass can carry a little warmth from a heated room, the reading may sit slightly above the true outdoor air temperature, especially on cold nights in a well-heated house. That’s worth knowing when you’re judging marginal frosts.
Can a window thermometer tell me if it's going to frost?
It tells you the temperature now, not what it will be at 4am. However, it's a very good guide when used alongside the forecast. On clear, still evenings, temperatures often keep falling through the night. If the thermometer is already low in the early evening and the sky is clear, a frost is likely by morning. In that case, cover tender plants with fleece, close greenhouse vents and cold frame lids, and bring pots of tender plants indoors or into the greenhouse. Air temperature at window height can also be a little higher than at ground level, where cold air settles on still nights. Ground frost can occur even when a thermometer higher up reads just above zero. If the window reading is close to freezing, treat ground level as colder.
When is it safe to plant out tender crops?
In much of the UK, frost-tender crops are traditionally planted out from mid to late spring, once the risk of frost has passed for your area. The exact timing varies widely from year to year and from region to region. Coastal and southern gardens often warm up earlier than inland, northern and high-altitude ones. A window thermometer helps you make that decision based on what’s actually happening in your garden, not just the date on the calendar. Watch for nights that stay comfortably above freezing over a run of days, alongside a settled forecast, before planting out courgettes, squash, beans, sweetcorn, tomatoes and other tender crops.
Does a window thermometer measure soil temperature?
No. It measures air temperature. Soil warms more slowly than air in spring and cools more slowly in autumn, so the two don't always match. For direct sowing outdoors, a soil thermometer gives a more accurate picture of whether the ground is warm enough for seeds to germinate. Many gardeners use both: the window thermometer for daily weather and frost checks, and a soil thermometer for sowing decisions.
Do I need batteries?
No. The Smart Garden Window Thermometer needs no batteries or power at all. There's nothing to charge, replace or set up. Once it's fixed in place, it simply works.
Looking after your window thermometer
It needs very little attention. A few simple habits keep it easy to read: Wipe the front gently with a soft, damp cloth if it becomes dusty, misty or marked by rain. Avoid abrasive cleaners and solvents, which can scratch or cloud plastic. Check the adhesive pads occasionally, especially after a hard winter. If the thermometer has worked loose, clean the glass and refit it with fresh pads. Take care when cleaning the windows, particularly with squeegees or window cleaners’ poles, so it isn’t knocked off.
Other places to use a window thermometer
While the obvious spot is a house window, it works on many other glass surfaces: Greenhouse glass, stuck to the inside to check the greenhouse temperature from outside, or to the outside to check the outdoor temperature from within. A conservatory or garden room window. The window of a shed, summerhouse or garden office. A porch window, for checking conditions before setting off for the allotment.
