Long before anyone sent a Christmas card, people marked midwinter by bringing greenery indoors. Branches of holly, trails of ivy, a bough of something green and alive at the darkest time of year. It's one of the oldest Christmas traditions there is, and one that gardeners understand without needing it explained. The Studio Wald Christmas Plants Pack of 6 carries that idea through the letterbox. It holds six different botanical Christmas designs, printed on thick, tactile board and boxed together, ready to send to the people who'd rather receive a plant than a penguin in a scarf.
What is the Studio Wald Christmas Plants Pack of 6?
It's a set of six Christmas cards, one of each of the six designs in Studio Wald's Christmas Plants range. Rather than six copies of the same card, you get the full collection, so everyone on your list receives something a little different.
The cards are printed on a thick board in soft white with a tactile finish, the kind of card that feels substantial in the hand. All six are packed into a greyboard envelope box, which keeps them flat and protected and makes the set easy to give as a small gift in its own right. A full-colour sticker on the back of the box shows the designs, so you can see what’s inside before you open it.
The cards are made in the United Kingdom.
Who are Studio Wald?
Studio Wald is an independent design studio based by the river in Leeds, founded by husband and wife team Freya and Jakob. From their studio workshop they design and produce gift stationery, prints and plant-related products. Their range includes flower presses, plant stands and botanical cards. Everything is made in the UK using good quality materials and a range of print processes chosen for their tactile results.
The studio employs a small team of makers, and each order is checked by hand before it leaves the workshop. “Wald” is German for forest, which feels about right for a studio whose work keeps returning to plants, wood and the things you gather on a walk.
Why choose a mixed pack rather than one design?
A single design in bulk is practical, but a mixed pack has a few advantages:
Different people get different cards, which matters more than you might think in families, offices and allotment societies where cards end up displayed side by side on the same mantelpiece or noticeboard.
You can match designs to people, choosing the one that suits each recipient best.
The full set displays beautifully if you keep a card or two for yourself, as a small run of botanical prints along a shelf.
Six is a manageable number for a short list of people who matter. It works for close friends, neighbours, the people who swapped seedlings with you this year, or the ones who kept your tomatoes watered while you were away.
What are the cards like to hold?
Studio Wald prints these on a thick board in soft white. The thickness gives the cards a reassuring weight, and the tactile surface makes them feel more like a small print than a throwaway greeting. The soft white is warmer and gentler than a bright, cold white, which suits botanical artwork and makes the colours sit nicely on the page.
It’s the sort of card people keep. Botanical cards in particular have a habit of ending up propped on desks, tucked into books as bookmarks, or pinned to the fridge long after the decorations have come down.
Why plants at Christmas?
Plants have been part of midwinter celebrations for far longer than Christmas cards have existed. Evergreens were a natural choice for winter festivals because they stay green when everything else is bare. That made them a symbol of life carrying on through the cold months.
Holly and ivy are among the oldest of these traditions in Britain, brought indoors to decorate homes and churches. Mistletoe has its own long history of folklore, and the custom of kissing beneath it is still going strong. The decorated Christmas tree, with roots in German tradition, became widely popular in Britain during the Victorian period. More recently, plants such as the poinsettia, originally from Mexico, the Christmas cactus and the amaryllis have become familiar festive houseplants, often given as gifts in December. Then there’s the hellebore, sometimes called the Christmas rose, which flowers in the depths of winter when very little else does.
For gardeners and growers, sending a plant-themed card is a way of keeping the garden in mind through the quiet months, a nod to what’s waiting under the soil until spring.
Who are these cards for?
Anyone who loves plants, which on most Christmas lists is more people than you'd think. These cards are especially well suited to:
Allotment neighbours and fellow plot holders.
Friends who have more houseplants than chairs.
The relative who always asks how the garden’s doing.
Garden club and horticultural society friends.
Volunteers at community gardens, orchards and green spaces.
Anyone who prefers thoughtful, well-made stationery to mass-produced cards.
They’re also a good choice when you want something festive that isn’t overtly religious or overly jolly. Botanical artwork is seasonal and warm without being loud.
What should I write in a Christmas card for a gardener?
Something simple and personal usually lands best. A few ideas:
A memory from the growing year, such as the glut of courgettes, the bean poles that blew over, or the first strawberry of summer.
A wish for next season, like a good crop, a dry spring, kind weather or fewer slugs.
A thank you for seeds shared, plants swapped, help given or produce passed over the fence.
A promise of something to come, such as cuttings in spring, a visit to see the garden, or a cup of tea at the plot.
Or keep it short and warm. “Wishing you a peaceful Christmas and a good growing year ahead” covers most gardeners rather nicely.
When should I post my Christmas cards?
Royal Mail publishes last recommended posting dates for Christmas each year, for both UK and international post. International dates are often well before Christmas, and earlier still for more distant countries. Check the current year's dates on the Royal Mail website, and leave a little extra time if you're sending abroad or using second class. Writing cards early in December, with a cup of something warm, is also more pleasant than writing them in a panic the night before the last post.
The greyboard envelope box
The six cards come packed in a greyboard envelope box. Greyboard is a dense, sturdy board that keeps the cards flat and protects their corners. That matters with thick card, which shows any bend or knock. It also means the set can be given as a small gift in its own right, for anyone who sends cards, writes letters or simply appreciates good stationery.
If you don’t use all six cards this year, the box is a tidy place to keep the rest until next Christmas.
Other ways to use the cards
Christmas cards don't have to go in the post. A few other ideas:
Tuck one in with a gift, particularly a plant, seeds, garden tools or a book about gardening.
Use one as a gift card with a hand-picked sprig of something from the garden tied to the front with twine.
Display the full set together as a seasonal arrangement on a mantelpiece, shelf or windowsill.
Keep your favourite and frame it as a small botanical print.
Use them as place cards at Christmas dinner, writing each guest’s name on the back.
