RHS Amaranthus Velvet Curtains Seeds by Mr Fothergill’s produce tall, dramatic plants with large deep crimson plumes and rich burgundy foliage. This striking half hardy annual is ideal for adding height and strong structure to sunny borders.

Velvet Curtains can reach approximately 150cm in height with a spread of around 45cm. The upright flower spikes create bold vertical impact and retain their colour well into autumn. As the flower heads mature they remain attractive and can be left on the plant for extended seasonal interest.

This variety thrives in full sun in a warm, sheltered position. It prefers well drained soil and benefits from consistent moisture while establishing. Once growing strongly it delivers reliable colour from June through to October.

The deep red tones work beautifully with warm planting schemes. It pairs especially well with yellows, oranges and sunflowers. Its height makes it ideal for the back of borders where it creates a strong backdrop for lower growing plants.

Velvet Curtains is also highly valued as a cut flower. The plumes add texture and depth to fresh arrangements and dry well for long lasting indoor displays. The bold stems provide structure in mixed bouquets.

This variety has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit for dependable garden performance. It is part of the seed range produced by Mr Fothergill’s in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society. Gardeners can expect consistent germination and reliable growth in UK conditions.

For outdoor sowing, sow from March to May in a prepared seed bed in flowering position. Sow thinly in rows 30cm apart and cover lightly with 0.5cm of fine soil. Firm gently and keep moist. Seedlings appear in 14 to 28 days. Thin to 30cm apart once large enough to handle.

For indoor sowing, sow from March to April in trays of seed compost. Cover with a fine layer of compost and keep at approximately 15 to 20°C. Remove cover when seedlings appear. Transplant 5cm apart in trays before hardening off gradually in late May. Plant out 30cm apart after risk of frost.

RHS Amaranthus Velvet Curtains is an architectural statement plant that delivers height, depth and long lasting summer colour.
