RHS Cleome Helen Campbell Seeds by Mr Fothergill’s produce tall, dramatic plants with large white flower heads and distinctive spider like petals. This variety is often known as Spider Flower due to its long stamens and airy structure.
Plants grow to around 120cm in height with a spread of approximately 45cm. The tall stems make it ideal for the back of sunny borders where it adds height and movement. From July to October, intricate white blooms create a soft yet striking display.
Cleome Helen Campbell holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, recognising its reliable performance and strong garden impact in UK conditions. The seed range is produced by Mr Fothergill’s in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society.
This half hardy annual thrives in full sun and well drained soil. It is perfect for mixed borders, wildlife friendly planting and informal garden schemes. The open flowers attract pollinators and provide nectar through late summer.
For indoor sowing, sow from February to March in trays of moist compost. Cover with a fine layer of compost. Firm gently and keep moist. Cover with glass or a propagator lid and maintain a temperature of 15 to 20C. Seedlings appear in 14 to 21 days. Remove cover once seedlings appear. When large enough, transplant 5cm apart in trays.
Stand plants outside for a few days in late May to acclimatise, avoiding frost. Transplant 45cm apart in a sunny flowering position. Keep moist and weed free during the growing season. Water regularly during hot dry weather.
Plants flower from July to October. Remove spent blooms to keep displays fresh. Please note stems can produce small spines, so handle with care.
RHS Cleome Helen Campbell is ideal for gardeners who want tall structure, long flowering performance and elegant white summer colour.
