RHS Convolvulus Blue Ensign Seeds by Mr Fothergill’s produce vibrant tri coloured blooms in rich blue, white and yellow. This compact hardy annual is perfect for sunny borders, baskets and patio containers.
Plants grow to around 30cm in height with a spread of approximately 25cm. The spreading habit makes it ideal for filling gaps at the front of borders or softening the edges of pots and tubs. From July to October, cheerful open flowers appear in abundance and create long lasting summer colour.
Each bloom features deep blue outer petals with a crisp white ring and bright yellow centre. The strong contrast makes this variety stand out clearly in mixed planting schemes. It performs best in full sun and well drained soil.
Convolvulus Blue Ensign holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, recognising its reliable garden performance. The seed range is produced by Mr Fothergill’s in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society.
For outdoor sowing, sow from March to May in a prepared seed bed in a sunny flowering position. Sow thinly in rows 25cm apart. Cover lightly with 0.5cm of fine soil. Firm gently and keep moist. When large enough, thin seedlings to 20cm apart. Keep moist and weed free during establishment.
For indoor sowing, sow from March to April in trays of seed compost. Cover with a fine layer of compost. Firm gently and keep moist. Cover with glass or a propagator lid and keep at approximately 15 to 20C. Seedlings appear in 14 to 28 days. Remove cover when seedlings appear. When large enough, transplant 5cm apart in trays. Stand outside for a few days in late May to acclimatise, avoiding frost. Transplant 20cm apart in flowering position.
Remove dead heads to prolong flowering. Seeds can also be sown directly into pots and tubs for simple container displays.
RHS Convolvulus Blue Ensign is ideal for gardeners who want bright colour, compact growth and reliable summer performance in smaller spaces.
