The tool with no obvious name and every obvious use
Ask most gardeners what a widger is and you'll get a shrug. Hand them one and show them what it does, and within a week it's the tool they can't find because they've used it for everything. Part trowel, part dibber, this little stainless steel implement fills the gap between the two, too narrow and precise for general digging, too sturdy and scoop-shaped for a dibber's usual job of poking holes.
Where it genuinely shines is around the potting bench. Easing a rootbound plant out of its pot without tearing the roots, lifting a seedling by its rootball rather than yanking it by the stem, firming compost into the corners of a seed tray where fingers are too clumsy, this is the tool built for exactly that scale of work.
Built for precision, not power
At 33cm overall length with a head just 3cm at its widest, this isn't trying to do the job of a trowel or a spade. It's deliberately small, deliberately narrow, and that's what makes it useful. The pointed, slightly curved blade slides down the inside edge of a pot to loosen compact rootballs without damaging the roots, and the same shape makes it good for teasing seedlings apart when pricking out, or nudging soil into small gaps that a bigger tool simply can't reach.
Finish and materials
The head is polished stainless steel, which resists rust and keeps its shine even with regular handling of wet compost. The handle is 100% FSC certified hardwood, giving it a proper weighted grip rather than the hollow feel of a cheaper plastic-handled version. A leather hanging cord is fitted so it can hang tidily on a hook rather than getting lost in a drawer of loose tools, which, given how small and easy to misplace it is, turns out to matter more than you'd expect.
RHS endorsed, lifetime guaranteed
This widger carries the Royal Horticultural Society's endorsement, one of gardening's most respected marks of quality. Like all of Burgon & Ball's RHS-endorsed stainless steel tools, it's backed by a lifetime guarantee against manufacturing defects, so it's built to be the sort of small tool you own once rather than replace every few seasons.
Who it suits
Anyone who does regular potting up, whether that's houseplants, seedlings, or allotment starts in modules and trays, will find this genuinely useful rather than a novelty. It's a particularly good fit for gardeners who grow from seed, since the narrow blade is ideal for pricking out delicate seedlings without crushing stems or damaging fragile root systems.
Looking after it
Stainless steel needs almost no upkeep beyond a wipe after use to keep compost from drying onto the surface. The hardwood handle benefits from an occasional wipe with linseed oil, and the leather cord will last longer if it's kept away from prolonged damp.
