One pot, one plant, no more daily watering panic
Every summer brings the same small crisis. You go away for the weekend, or a heatwave arrives midweek, and the tomatoes in pots are the first to suffer. Containers dry out far faster than open ground, and a plant that's wilted badly a few times rarely forgives you. The Garland Self Watering Grow Pot Tower takes the edge off that. It holds 11 litres of compost, keeps 4 litres of water in reserve beneath the roots, and comes with a 1.5m support frame built in. It's a complete growing station for one tall, thirsty plant, and you can see at a glance when it needs topping up.
What is the Garland Self Watering Grow Pot Tower?
It's a self-watering container and plant support in one. The pot has an 11 litre planting capacity with an easy-fill 4 litre water reservoir underneath. A float indicator shows how much water is left. A sturdy aluminium frame, 1.5m high with four support rings, slots securely into the pot, giving tall plants something to grow up from day one. Both the pot and the frame have an anchor point for an optional central bamboo cane, for extra support with heavier crops. The cane isn’t supplied. The pot is made from 100% recycled, BPA-free plastic, and the tower assembles in minutes. This version is green, which blends quietly into planting on the patio, in the greenhouse or on the allotment. It’s also available in red and anthracite.
Who makes it?
Garland Products is a British garden products manufacturer based in Kingswinford in the West Midlands. Its range covers propagation, patio growing, plant supports, watering and garden tidying. The company manufactures in the UK and makes extensive use of recycled plastic across its range.
How does a self-watering pot work?
A self-watering pot keeps a store of water in a reservoir beneath the compost. Instead of relying entirely on watering from above, the plant draws on this reserve as the compost dries. That gives the roots a steadier supply of moisture between top-ups. With the Grow Pot Tower, you fill the reservoir through the easy-fill system. The float indicator rises and falls with the water level, so you can see when it’s getting low without lifting the pot or poking a finger into the compost.
Why does consistent watering matter?
For many fruiting crops, how regularly you water matters as much as how much. Tomatoes are the classic example. Irregular watering, where compost swings between bone dry and soaking wet, is linked to blossom end rot, which shows as dark, sunken patches at the base of the fruit. It also contributes to fruit splitting. Peppers, chillies and aubergines also do better with steady moisture, and sweet peas flower more freely when they’re never allowed to dry out. A reservoir under the compost helps smooth out the peaks and troughs, especially on hot days or when you can’t water as often as you’d like.
What can I grow in the Grow Pot Tower?
Garland suggests tomatoes, peppers and sweet peas, and the combination of an 11 litre pot and a 1.5m frame suits plenty of other tall or climbing plants too: Cordon or bush tomatoes, one plant per pot. Sweet peppers and chillies, which appreciate the support as fruit develops. Aubergines, which can become top-heavy when laden with fruit. Sweet peas, several plants trained around the rings. Annual climbers such as morning glory, black-eyed Susan (thunbergia) and climbing nasturtiums. Cucamelons and other small climbing edibles. For the best results, grow one larger crop such as a tomato, pepper or aubergine per pot. Climbers like sweet peas can be grown several to a pot.
How do I set up the Grow Pot Tower?
Assembly takes just a few minutes. Slot the aluminium frame sections together and into the pot. Garland notes that the metal poles are a tight fit and need to be tapped firmly into place. Once fully built, the tower should feel rigid, sturdy enough that you could lift the whole unit by one pole. If it feels wobbly, tap the poles home more firmly. Then: Fill the pot with a good quality multipurpose or container compost. Peat-free compost works well. Plant your seedling or young plant, firming the compost gently around it. Water well from the top to settle the compost around the roots. Fill the reservoir through the easy-fill point, and check the float indicator. If you’re growing a heavy-cropping plant, push a bamboo cane into the central anchor point for extra support.
How do I train plants on the frame?
The four rings give you tie-in points at different heights as the plant grows. For a cordon tomato, tie the main stem loosely to the rings or the central cane as it grows, and pinch out side shoots in the usual way. For peppers and aubergines, the rings support the branches as fruit develops. For sweet peas and other climbers, guide the young shoots up the frame and tie them in loosely until they start to grip by themselves. Leave a little slack in every tie so stems have room to thicken.
Do I still need to water from the top?
Yes, sometimes. Water from the top when you first plant, to settle the compost and get the roots established. After that, the reservoir does most of the work, but an occasional top-up from above helps keep the whole root zone moist, particularly in very hot weather or once the plant is large and growing strongly.
How often should I fill the reservoir?
It depends on the weather, the size of the plant and where the pot is standing. A young plant in spring may take days to use 4 litres. A large tomato in full fruit on a hot summer afternoon can use a surprising amount in a single day. Check the float indicator regularly, and top up whenever the level is low.
Do plants in self-watering pots still need feeding?
Yes. Compost in a container has a limited store of nutrients, and fruiting crops are hungry. Once tomatoes, peppers and aubergines start to flower and set fruit, feed them regularly with a liquid high-potash feed, following the instructions on the pack. Sweet peas also benefit from feeding through the flowering season.
Where should I put it?
Most of the crops this tower suits love sun and warmth. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot such as a south-facing patio, against a warm wall, on a balcony or in the greenhouse. A tall plant on a 1.5m frame catches the wind, so avoid very exposed spots. In breezy positions, use the central cane for extra stability and consider standing the pot against a wall.
Why recycled plastic?
The pot is made from 100% recycled plastic, giving material that already exists a second life rather than using new plastic. It's also BPA-free, which matters to many growers using containers for food crops.
Looking after the Grow Pot Tower
At the end of the season, remove the plant and compost, which can go on the compost heap unless the plant was diseased. Empty the reservoir completely, especially before frosts, since water left standing can freeze and expand. Rinse the pot, wipe down the frame, and store everything somewhere dry until spring. Before replanting, give the pot a scrub to remove old compost and reduce the risk of carrying pests and diseases into the new season.
