  1. Make the most of smaller spaces and breezier gardens with RHS Broad Bean Statissa Seeds by Mr Fothergills. Statissa is a compact spring sowing variety that delivers early crops of well filled short pods on sturdy robust plants. It is especially suited to exposed windy locations, small gardens and container growing where taller broad beans can be difficult to manage.

Plants form neat upright clumps rather than very tall stems which makes them easier to support and to fit into tight plots. Pods are shorter than some traditional varieties but are well packed with plump beans that have a lovely classic broad bean flavour. Harvest while the beans are still small and tender for the sweetest taste, or leave a few to develop for a stronger richer flavour in cooked dishes.

Because Statissa is an early cropping type, it is perfect for starting off the broad bean season. Sow from late winter into spring and you can be picking your own fresh beans from early summer onwards. The compact habit means plants stand up well in windy gardens and they are ideal for edging beds, filling smaller veg patches or growing in large containers on the patio.

RHS Broad Bean Statissa has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit which confirms that it performs reliably in UK conditions. As part of the seed range produced by Mr Fothergills in partnership with the RHS, this variety has been carefully trialled for flavour, yield and garden performance so you can sow with confidence.

Botanically known as Vicia faba, Statissa belongs to the peas and beans group and makes an excellent partner to peas, runner beans and French beans in the kitchen garden. Plants usually reach around 70cm in height which is easy to stake if needed but low enough to cope with blustery weather.

Sow outdoors from March to May in a prepared seed bed, or start in pots of moist compost from February for an earlier harvest. Space seeds in wide double rows so air can circulate around the plants, and keep soil moist and weed free. Pick pods regularly from June to August while beans are still small and tender to enjoy the very best flavour from your crop.

Each packet contains an average of 50 seeds, enough for a generous row or several container plantings. Pair Statissa with AllotMate Essentials compost, supports and feeds to get your plants off to the strongest possible start.

With the added reassurance of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, Statissa is a dependable variety that earns its keep in any compact kitchen garden.
