RHS Catananche Cupid’s Dart Seeds by Mr Fothergill’s produce elegant blue flowers with dark centres and delicate petals. This hardy perennial is a favourite in cottage gardens and sunny borders.
Plants grow to around 60cm in height with a spread of approximately 30cm. Tall, slender stems carry eye catching blooms from June to September. The flowers are long lasting and work beautifully as fresh cut flowers or dried arrangements.
Cupid’s Dart is known for reliable performance and strong garden impact. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, recognising its consistent results in UK conditions. The seed range is produced by Mr Fothergill’s in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society.
This variety thrives in full sun and well drained soil. It is ideal for mixed borders, informal planting schemes and wildlife friendly gardens. The open flowers are attractive to pollinators and help support beneficial insects through the summer months.
For indoor sowing, sow from February to April in trays of moist compost. Cover with 0.5cm of compost. Firm gently and keep moist. Cover with glass or a propagator lid and maintain a temperature of 15 to 20C. Seedlings appear in 21 to 28 days. Remove cover once seedlings appear. When large enough, transplant 10cm apart in trays. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions in May, avoiding frost. Transplant 25cm apart in a sunny flowering position.
For outdoor sowing, sow from May to July in a prepared seed bed. Sow thinly in rows 25cm apart. Cover lightly with fine soil. Firm gently and keep moist. When large enough, thin to 10cm apart. Transplant 25cm apart in autumn.
Plants flower from June to September. Early sowings may flower in the first year. Trim plants back once flowers fade to encourage clumping and strong regrowth.
RHS Catananche Cupid’s Dart is perfect for gardeners who want soft blue tones, long flowering stems and dependable summer colour.
