RHS Flax Scarlet Linum Seeds by Mr Fothergill’s produce vibrant scarlet red flowers with darker centres, carried on slender upright stems that gently move in the breeze. These silky blooms create a light, natural effect in sunny borders and cottage garden planting schemes.

This hardy annual grows to approximately 45cm in height with a neat spread of around 15cm. When sown in drifts or long rows, the fine foliage and delicate flowers combine to create a soft, flowing display from June through to September.

Scarlet Flax holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, recognising its reliability and strong performance in UK garden conditions. The seed range is produced by Mr Fothergill’s in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society.

Flax Scarlet thrives in full sun and well drained soil. It is easy to grow directly where it is to flower, making it ideal for relaxed planting styles, wildflower inspired borders and informal cottage gardens. For an extended flowering season, make 2 to 3 successive sowings.

For outdoor sowing, sow from March to May in a prepared seed bed in a sunny flowering position. Sow thinly in rows 20cm apart and cover lightly with approximately 0.5cm of fine soil. Firm gently and keep moist. Seedlings appear in 14 to 28 days.

When large enough to handle, thin to 10cm apart. Keep moist and weed free during establishment. Remove faded blooms to prolong flowering, or allow attractive seed heads to develop.

Plants flower from June to September.
