RHS Alchemilla mollis Seeds by Mr Fothergill’s produce a charming hardy perennial known for its scalloped, velvety foliage and frothy sprays of delicate lime green flowers. Often referred to as Lady’s Mantle, this versatile plant is valued for its soft texture, ground covering habit and ability to thrive in a wide range of garden settings.
Perfect for border edging, cottage garden planting and informal schemes, Alchemilla mollis forms generous clumps of foliage that create an attractive carpet effect. Reaching approximately 60cm in height with a spread of up to 75cm, it provides both structure and softness, helping to knit planting areas together naturally.
The distinctive rounded leaves catch and hold dew droplets after rain, creating a sparkling effect that adds visual interest even when the plant is not in full flower. From June to September, airy sprays of small chartreuse blooms rise above the foliage, creating a soft haze of colour that complements both bold and pastel planting combinations.
This variety is drought tolerant once established and performs reliably in full sun or partial shade. It thrives in well drained soil and is particularly effective in filling gaps between shrubs and perennials. Its natural spreading habit makes it an excellent choice for suppressing weeds and reducing maintenance in larger borders.
Alchemilla mollis is also a valuable pollinator friendly plant, attracting beneficial insects throughout the flowering period. The flowers work beautifully in fresh or dried arrangements, adding a light, airy texture to bouquets.
Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit for reliability and strong garden performance, this variety has been recognised for consistent results across UK growing conditions. As part of the seed range produced by Mr Fothergill’s in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society, these seeds offer trusted quality and dependable germination.
For indoor sowing, sow from February to April in trays of seed compost. Cover with a fine layer of compost and keep at approximately 15 to 18°C. Seedlings typically appear within 14 to 21 days. Once large enough to handle, transplant into small pots and gradually acclimatise outdoors from May, avoiding frost. Final spacing should allow approximately 30cm between plants.
For outdoor sowing, sow from May to June in a prepared seed bed. Sow thinly in rows approximately 25cm apart and cover lightly with fine soil. Thin seedlings to around 10cm apart before transplanting to their final flowering position from September to October.
Flowering generally occurs from June to September in the year following sowing. Deadheading after flowering will help prevent excessive self seeding and maintain a tidy appearance.
Whether used as elegant ground cover, soft border edging or as a filler between statement perennials, RHS Alchemilla mollis offers dependable growth, attractive foliage and long lasting seasonal interest.
