Bright, sweet and brilliantly easy to grow, RHS Tomato Cherry Gold Nugget Seeds by Mr Fothergills is a must for anyone who loves cherry tomatoes with a real burst of flavour. This attractive variety produces slightly oval round fruits in a cheerful golden yellow, with tender skins and a mouth watering taste that balances tangy freshness with lovely sweetness.
Gold Nugget is a determinate tomato, which means it has a compact, bushy habit that is ideal for containers, patios and smaller garden spaces. It is a great choice if you want dependable crops without the tall vigorous growth of cordon tomatoes. Because plants stay manageable, this variety is perfect for gardeners who want a simpler tomato growing routine while still enjoying generous harvests of tasty fruit.
Sow indoors from March to April in pots or trays of seed compost. Sow thinly, cover with a fine layer of compost, then firm gently and keep moist. Cover with glass, polythene or a propagator lid and keep at around 15 to 20°C. Seedlings usually appear in 7 to 14 days. Once they are around 10cm tall, pot on into individual pots and grow on in a bright place at around 15°C.
In late May, stand plants outside for a few days to harden off, avoiding frost. Then plant into large containers or a warm sunny spot outdoors, spacing plants around 45cm apart. Gold Nugget does not need side shoot removal, so you can simply water, feed and let it grow. Only remove the growing tip if plants become too large. Keep compost or soil evenly moist and weed free, then enjoy harvests from August through to October. Feed every 2 to 3 weeks once the first trusses have set to support steady fruiting.
Gold Nugget has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit, recognising its reliability and good performance in UK conditions. As part of the Mr Fothergills seed range produced in partnership with the RHS, it is a proven variety you can sow with confidence.
Whether you are growing on a patio, in a greenhouse, or in a sheltered spot in the garden, Gold Nugget is a joyful tomato to grow, especially for snacking straight from the plant, adding colour to salads, or serving alongside summer dishes.
