A different kind of glove for a different kind of job
Every other glove in a well-stocked shed is designed around some combination of dexterity, grip, and moderate protection. The Premium Suede Tuff Riggers XL10 isn't one of those. This is a rigger-style glove, built for the jobs where impact protection genuinely matters: knocking in fence posts, hauling rough timber, handling paving slabs, or any task where your knuckles and wrists are at real risk of taking a knock.
Real leather where it counts
The palm is made from 100% cow suede leather, chosen for its combination of grip and durability under sustained rough handling. Suede's napped surface grips well even when your hands are dry and dusty, which matters on exactly the kind of jobs this glove is built for: gripping fence posts, sleepers, or rough-sawn timber where a smoother material would slip. Genuine leather at the palm also means the glove resists abrasion and puncture in a way no fabric-only glove can match.
Back and cuff: built to move, not just protect
The back of the hand and the cuff are made from a cotton and polyester blend (90% cotton, 10% polyester), a lighter, more flexible material than the leather palm. This is a deliberate construction choice: keeping the back of the hand in a breathable, flexible fabric means the glove doesn't turn into a stiff, sweaty box the moment you close your fist, even though the palm itself is properly armoured. Underneath, a full 100% cotton lining adds comfort and helps manage sweat during longer, more physical sessions.
The knuckle guard
This is the feature that separates a rigger glove from an ordinary leather work glove. A dedicated knuckle guard sits over the top of the hand, providing a layer of impact protection specifically where knuckles take the brunt of a knock, whether that's from a slipped hammer, a swinging gate, or simply catching your hand on something solid mid-task. It's not a feature you'll find on lighter gardening gloves, and it's precisely why this glove exists as a separate category from the rest of the range.
The wrist guard
Alongside the knuckle guard, a wrist guard adds protection at the point where the hand meets the forearm, an area that's genuinely vulnerable during heavy manual work: swinging tools, handling awkward loads, or working in tight spaces where a knock to the wrist is a real possibility rather than a remote one. Together with the knuckle guard, this makes the Tuff Riggers a glove built around protecting the hand as a whole, not just the palm.
Where this glove earns its keep
This is the pair for the heaviest jobs in the shed: fencing work, groundworks, handling paving slabs or breeze blocks, demolition or clearance work involving debris, or any task where there's a genuine risk of impact to the hand rather than just abrasion or thorns. It's a deliberate step up from the thorn and puncture resistant range in terms of what it's built to withstand, and it should be reached for specifically when a job calls for that level of protection rather than worn as an everyday gardening glove.
Sizing: XL10, and who it suits
This is the extra large size in the range, measuring roughly 14cm in height and 27cm in width, built for a genuinely large hand. Rigger gloves in general run to a looser, more generous fit than close-fitting gardening gloves, since the priority here is protection and ease of getting the glove on and off quickly, not fine dexterity. If you've found other rigger-style gloves run small or tight across the knuckle guard specifically, the XL10 is built to avoid that problem.
Looking after your gloves
The suede leather palm benefits from being allowed to dry out fully and naturally after getting wet or muddy, away from direct heat, which helps it stay supple rather than becoming stiff or cracked over time. The cotton and polyester back and cuff can generally tolerate more regular cleaning than the leather palm, but it's worth checking any care label specific to your pair before machine washing the whole glove, since the leather palm and the guard inserts may need gentler treatment than the fabric sections.
A specialist glove, not an everyday one
It's worth being clear about what this glove is for. This isn't designed to replace a lighter, more dexterous gardening glove for everyday planting and weeding; the knuckle and wrist guards add bulk that would get in the way of fiddly work. It's built specifically for the heavier, higher-impact end of outdoor and garden work, the jobs where the risk to your hands is real and a lighter glove simply wouldn't offer enough protection.
