RHS Foxglove Lutea Seeds by Mr Fothergill’s produce elegant spires of soft primrose yellow tubular flowers that bring height and subtle colour to shaded borders. This refined perennial foxglove, Digitalis lutea, is perfect for dappled shade, woodland style planting and naturalistic garden designs.
Unlike the more traditional pink foxgloves, Lutea offers delicate creamy yellow blooms that appear from June to August in the year following sowing. Growing to approximately 60cm tall with a spread of around 30cm, it creates vertical interest without overwhelming smaller planting schemes.
This variety holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit for reliable performance and consistent garden quality. It is also recognised as RHS Plants for Pollinators, attracting bees and beneficial insects throughout its flowering period. The seed range is produced by Mr Fothergill’s in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society.
Foxglove Lutea thrives in partial shade or areas of light woodland, but will also grow in sun if soil remains moist and well drained. It is ideal for planting beside fences, hedges and shrubs where its upright stems can rise naturally through surrounding foliage.
For indoor sowing, sow from April to July in trays of seed compost. Sow thinly and do not cover the seed, simply firm gently into the surface. Keep moist and place in a cold frame or cool greenhouse. Seedlings appear in 21 to 35 days.
For outdoor sowing, sow from April to July in a prepared seed bed. Sow thinly and cover lightly with fine soil. Keep moist during germination.
When large enough to handle, thin seedlings to 10cm apart. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions before transplanting 25cm apart in their final flowering position from September to October. Plants flower from June to August the following year.
Allow some flowers to set seed if you wish to encourage natural self seeding in future seasons.
Caution: All parts of Digitalis are toxic if eaten. Keep away from children and pets.
